OSRS Vorkath guide 2026: mechanics, gear and the 2026 freeze change
Vorkath is a solo boss on Ungael that you unlock by completing Dragon Slayer II, and he is one of the most consistent money makers in the game — the wiki's current estimates sit between roughly 2.5M and 4.1M GP per hour depending on gear. He uses all three combat styles but only melees you if you stand next to him, he breathes three kinds of dragonfire (standard, venom, and prayer-disabling), and every 6 attacks he cycles between two specials: a freeze that spawns a zombie which explodes when it reaches you, and an acid-pool + rapid-fire phase. The wiki currently recommends 90+ Ranged for the blowpipe or dragon hunter crossbow method, or 90+ Attack/Strength for the dragon hunter lance. A 2026 change removed the old trick of using transformation rings to escape the freeze special, so you now have to either bring the right gear or simply eat through it.
Key takeaways
- Unlock: complete Dragon Slayer II, then travel to Ungael via Torfinn from Rellekka.
- Fixed special loop: freeze + zombie spawn, then acid pools + rapid fire, alternating every 6 attacks.
- Melee only if you stand adjacent — fight from range and use the Salve amulet (ei).
- Gear tiers: blowpipe (~2.5M GP/hr), dragon hunter crossbow (~3.7M), lance (~4.1M).
- June 2026: transformation rings no longer dodge the freeze special.
How to unlock Vorkath
Vorkath is locked behind the Dragon Slayer II quest. Once it is complete you can travel to the island of Ungael by speaking to Torfinn, the sailor at Rellekka, and he takes you to the boss's lair.
The fight is instanced with a death bank: if you die, Torfinn returns your items for a fee of 100,000 coins. The death bank makes the boss forgiving to learn, but an unsafe death clears it completely, so bank your valuables before long sessions.
- Requires Dragon Slayer II completed.
- Travel: Torfinn at Rellekka → Ungael.
- Instanced fight with a death bank (100K coin reclaim).
- Also counts as a blue dragon and zombie Slayer task (750 Slayer XP).
The attack loop and specials
Vorkath is a level 732 boss with 750 hitpoints and a 5-tick attack cycle. He uses all three combat styles, but he only melees you if you stand in melee range or diagonally adjacent — from range he relies on his dragonfire and special attacks.
There are three dragonfire types: standard dragonfire that hits up to 80, a venom version, and a prayer-disabling breath that needs better antifire protection. He also has a high-arcing fireball you must move out of the way of — a direct hit is lethal regardless of your dragonfire protection.
Every 6 normal or fire attacks (alternating) he uses one of two specials. The first freezes you in place and spawns a zombie that walks towards you and explodes when it reaches you, dealing up to 60 damage based on its remaining health — Vorkath is immune to damage until the zombie is killed or detonated. The second spreads acid pools across the floor while he rapidly fires at you, and during it he takes 50% reduced damage.
Gear and stats
Because Vorkath is an undead dragon, the Salve amulet (ei) is the single biggest damage item in the fight and it stacks with dragon-hunting weapons — but it does not stack with a Slayer helmet. The wiki's three standard methods and their level requirements are: toxic blowpipe (90+ Ranged), dragon hunter crossbow (90+ Ranged, 80+ Defence), and dragon hunter lance (90+ Attack and Strength, 85+ Defence).
For the melee route, lance + Dragonfire ward (or DFS) is the classic setup; for ranged, the crossbow route pairs well with a Dragonfire ward too. Antifire potions are essential, and rigour or piety (74+ Prayer) is strongly recommended for the damage and defence boosts.
- Salve amulet (ei) is the top damage item; it does not stack with a Slayer helmet.
- Blowpipe route: 90+ Ranged.
- Dragon hunter crossbow route: 90+ Ranged, 80+ Defence.
- Dragon hunter lance route: 90+ Attack/Strength, 85+ Defence.
- Antifire + Rigour/Piety (74+ Prayer) recommended.
Profit and drops
Vorkath's current wiki GP/hr estimates are about 2,492,539 for the blowpipe method, 3,657,803 for the dragon hunter crossbow, and 4,096,032 for the lance. Like all wiki figures they move with Grand Exchange prices.
The guaranteed drop is 2x superior dragon bones plus 2x blue dragonhide, and you roll the standard drop table twice per kill, which the wiki averages at roughly 155,000 GP per kill. The notable rare drops are Vorkath's head (1/50, guaranteed on the 50th kill), the draconic visage (1/5000) and skeletal visage (1/5000), the dragonbone necklace (1/1000), the jar of decay (1/3000), and the Vorki pet (1/3000).
The 2026 freeze change
On 30 June 2026, Vorkath's freeze special was changed: transformation rings no longer let you dodge the freeze. Previously players could use a transformation ring to become immune to the freeze as part of a speedrun or low-supply technique; that option is now gone, so you plan for the freeze normally.
In practice that means either carrying enough food to tank the freeze + zombie explosion, or positioning so the zombie has the shortest possible walk. The mechanics of the zombie itself are unchanged — it still explodes on reaching you and still shields Vorkath until it is dealt with.
Questions players ask
What quest do you need to fight Vorkath?+
Dragon Slayer II. Once it is complete, speak to Torfinn at Rellekka to sail to Ungael, where the boss is fought in an instanced lair with a death bank.
What is the best gear for Vorkath?+
The Salve amulet (ei) is the top item because Vorkath is undead. Beyond that the wiki recommends either the toxic blowpipe, the dragon hunter crossbow, or the dragon hunter lance depending on your levels — lance is currently the highest GP/hr option.
How do you deal with Vorkath's special attacks?+
Every 6 attacks he alternates between a freeze that spawns an exploding zombie and an acid-pool + rapid-fire phase. Kill or outrun the zombie, walk to avoid the acid, and always dodge the high-arcing fireball which can one-shot you.
How much GP per hour does Vorkath make?+
The wiki's current estimates are roughly 2.5M (blowpipe), 3.7M (dragon hunter crossbow) and 4.1M (lance) GP per hour. These move with GE prices.
What changed about Vorkath in 2026?+
On 30 June 2026, transformation rings no longer dodge the freeze special attack. The rest of the fight is unchanged.
