OSRS Trawling nets guide 2026: ship facility, net tiers and the fishing speed change

A trawling net is a ship facility you install on a player-owned skiff or sloop to go deep sea trawling at shoals. Operating a net at the correct depth grants both Sailing and Fishing XP, and the fish you catch are stored in your ship's cargo hold. All nets fish at the same speed: 3 ticks per roll (2 ticks with tick manipulation), and each net holds up to 250 fish. There are four net tiers, each requiring Sailing and Construction levels and unlocking deeper shoals: Rope (Sailing 56/Con 45, shallow, 2 fish max), Linen (65/61, shallow+moderate, 3), Hemp (76/70, up to deep, 4), and Cotton (84/73, all depths, 5). In the 20 May 2026 update ('The Red Reef is Out Today!'), trawling nets began rolling for fish every 3 ticks instead of every 4 — roughly 25% faster fishing — and Sailing XP at the correct depth was increased. Beware: teleporting or disembarking discards uncollected fish, while logging out normally auto-transfers them to your cargo hold.

Key takeaways

  • A trawling net is a ship facility for deep sea fishing at shoals, granting Sailing and Fishing XP with fish stored in the cargo hold.
  • There are four net tiers — Rope, Linen, Hemp and Cotton — with Sailing/Construction requirements and deeper shoal access.
  • All nets fish at 3 ticks per roll (2 with tick manipulation); each holds up to 250 fish.
  • The 20 May 2026 update made nets roll fish every 3 ticks instead of 4 (~25% faster) and boosted Sailing XP at the correct depth.
  • Teleporting or disembarking discards uncollected fish; normal logouts auto-transfer them to the cargo hold.

What are trawling nets?

A trawling net is a ship facility that you install on a player-owned skiff or sloop. Once installed, you can operate it at shoals to go deep sea trawling, which grants both Sailing and Fishing experience and produces fish that are stored in your ship's cargo hold.

All nets fish at the same speed — 3 ticks per roll (2 ticks with tick manipulation) — and each net can store up to 250 fish. Use the 'Collect-from' option to move the catch to your inventory or cargo hold.

Two nets do not increase capacity, and emptying one net empties both. Ironmen must have personally built the highest net tier on the ship in order to use it.

02

Net tiers and the depths they unlock

Rope is the base tier, requiring Sailing 56 and Construction 45. It fishes the shallow depths and catches up to 2 fish per action.

Linen requires Sailing 65 and Construction 61, and unlocks shallow and moderate depths, catching up to 3 fish per action.

Hemp requires Sailing 76 and Construction 70, and unlocks shallow, moderate and deep depths, catching up to 4 fish per action.

Cotton is the highest tier, requiring Sailing 84 and Construction 73. It fishes all depths and catches up to 5 fish per action. Better nets catch more fish per action and access deeper shoals, where the better catches are found.

03

The 2026 fishing speed change

In the 20 May 2026 update, titled 'The Red Reef is Out Today!', Jagex reworked how trawling nets fish. Nets now roll for fish every 3 ticks instead of every 4 ticks, which is roughly 25% faster fishing.

The update also increased the Sailing XP you gain from operating nets at the correct depth. This made deep sea trawling noticeably faster for both Fishing and Sailing training, and reduced the idle time between catches.

04

How to use them safely

The main trap with trawling nets is losing your catch. If you disembark or teleport while fish are in the net, the uncollected fish are discarded. Always collect your catch before leaving the ship.

Logging out via the logout button auto-transfers fish to your cargo hold (with any excess discarded), but forceful logouts — X-logging, 6-hour disconnects, or connection loss — discard everything. To protect a large haul, collect it into your cargo hold or inventory before any risky logout.

Questions players ask

Questions players ask

What are trawling nets in OSRS?+

Ship facilities installed on skiffs/sloops for deep sea fishing at shoals, granting Sailing and Fishing XP with fish stored in the cargo hold.

What are the trawling net tiers and requirements?+

Rope (Sailing 56/Con 45), Linen (65/61), Hemp (76/70) and Cotton (84/73). Higher tiers catch more fish and access deeper shoals.

How fast do trawling nets fish in 2026?+

Every 3 ticks per roll (2 with tick manipulation) since the 20 May 2026 update — roughly 25% faster than before.

Do I lose fish if I teleport away?+

Yes — disembarking or teleporting discards uncollected fish. Normal logouts auto-transfer them to the cargo hold, but forceful logouts discard everything.
