OSRS Slayer gear guide 2026: the essential items, budget setups and when to upgrade

The single most important Slayer item is the slayer helmet — upgraded from the black mask — because it grants 15% more accuracy and damage on task. Core supports are a good weapon per combat style, an amulet slot that matches your style (the necklace of fangs is the new budget ranged pick for ~87k), a torso/defender for melee, and super antis for the many poison/venom tasks. For budget melee, an abyssal whip or dragon scimitar with a dragon defender and a strength amulet works for most of the 70s; for ranged, a magic shortbow (imbued) or rune crossbow with broad bolts plus the necklace of fangs; for magic, an ancient staff and best-in-slot robe set you can afford (with occult necklace for damage). The classic high-value upgrades are: imbued slayer helmet, torture/rancour or anguish when you can afford them, a blowpipe for ranged tasks, a trident for magic, and the ferocious gloves (slayer points) plus a ring of wealth or imbued berserker ring. If you plan to boss on task, Araxxor's amulet of rancour and the noxious halberd are the end-game targets; the Slayer training guide covers which tasks to block and skip.

Key takeaways

  • The slayer helmet (upgraded black mask) gives 15% more accuracy and damage on task — make it your first goal.
  • Budget melee: whip or dragon scimitar + dragon defender + strength amulet.
  • Budget ranged: magic shortbow (i) or rune crossbow + broad bolts + the necklace of fangs (~87k).
  • Budget magic: ancient staff + your best robe set + occult necklace.
  • Save for: imbued helmet, torture/rancour, anguish, blowpipe, trident, ferocious gloves.
  • On-task bossing is the fastest XP and GP — Araxxor's rancour and noxious halberd are the end-game prizes.
01

The slayer helmet: non-negotiable

The slayer helmet is the most important item in any slayer setup. It is made by combining a black mask with a nose peg, earmuffs, spiny helmet and facemask, and it applies a 15% accuracy and damage boost on task — on top of the black mask's melee boost. Nothing else in the game gives that much per-slot value for slayer.

The upgraded versions are strictly better: the imbued slayer helmet adds the Ranged and Magic boosts while on task, which makes ranged and magic slayer tasks viable — and it is charged with a scroll of imbuing earned from Nightmare Zone. Later, recolours (including the araxyte head from Araxxor) are purely cosmetic.

If you only take one piece of advice from this guide: grind the slayer points or buy the mask components early, because the helmet pays for itself in every single task after that.

02

Budget melee setup

For most of the mid-game, a dragon scimitar (or a whip once you hit 70 Attack) with a dragon defender, a torso or fighter torso, dragon legs and a strength amulet handles almost every melee task. The fighter torso from Barbarian Assault is still the best non-degrading Strength-bonus body and worth the hour or two of minigame time.

For jewellery, an amulet of glory or fury covers you until you can afford a torture (or rancour). A berserker ring (imbued if you have the points) beats every other ring for melee DPS, and a ring of wealth is a fine budget alternative for clue and drop visibility.

Weapons worth saving for: the abyssal tentacle for the accuracy and the noxious halberd (from Araxxor) as the end-game slash option. Both pair naturally with slayer since Araxxor can be assigned as a task.

  • Weapon: dragon scimitar → whip → tentacle → noxious halberd.
  • Shield: dragon defender until avernic.
  • Body: fighter torso (Strength bonus) or torso.
  • Jewellery: glory/fury → torture/rancour; berserker ring (i).
  • Legs: dragon platelegs until Bandos.
03

Budget ranged setup

Ranged slayer is best with a magic shortbow (imbued) or a rune crossbow with broad bolts for the mid-game. Broad bolts are cheap and buyable from Slayer Masters, which makes them the default ammo until dragon ammo. The 2 September 2026 update added a perfect budget necklace: the necklace of fangs (+12 Ranged attack, +1 Ranged strength, dropped by turoths, ~87k on the GE) — it beats glory and fury for ranged offence at a fraction of anguish's price.

A dark bow or magic shortbow special is nice-to-have for burst damage; the real upgrades are the toxic blowpipe (75 Ranged) for speed, an anguish when you can afford it, and an imbued slayer helmet so the 15% boost applies to ranged.

Don't forget Ava's device in the ammo slot — it collects most of your arrows and is one of the highest-value items in the game for its slot.

04

Budget magic setup

Magic tasks are slower until you have the right weapon. The ancient staff is the standard cheap option, and a god cape or better gives the damage boost. The occult necklace (+10% magic damage) is one of the best value magic upgrades in the game and should come before most other jewellery.

The trident of the seas (and later the swamp trident) is the turning point for magic slayer: it hits fast and needs no runes beyond the charges. Until then, fire wave with a smoke staff is the budget main damage spell.

For armour, your best robe set is fine — Mystic robes, then Ahrim's, then Ancestral. Magic slayer tasks also benefit from the imbued slayer helmet's magic boost, so it pays to have it before heavy magic training.

05

Utilities and quality of life

Super antis (or at least antipoisons) are mandatory for the many poison and venom tasks — turoths, kurasks and several bosses will wreck your trips without them. A bonecrusher and herb sack from slayer rewards, plus a gem bag from the Gem Mine, reduce banking trips dramatically.

Ferocious gloves from the slayer reward shop are the best in slot for the hand slot once you can afford them, and an imbued slayer ring or ring of wealth covers jewellery QoL. Always carry a spade for clues and a games necklace for quick resupply.

Finally, a few bank presets per style (melee/ranged/magic + gear switch) cut task-to-task downtime more than any single item — most of slayer's time is spent getting ready.

06

The upgrade path worth saving for

In rough order of value: imbued slayer helmet → whip/tentacle → torso (if missing) → necklace of fangs or fury → ferocious gloves → blowpipe (ranged tasks) → trident (magic tasks) → torture/rancour → anguish → Bandos → ancestral. Each step is a meaningful, not marginal, upgrade for slayer.

On-task bossing is where gear really pays: Araxxor tasks drop the amulet of rancour and noxious halberd pieces, and other slayer bosses (from the Araxxor guide to Cerberus) turn tasks into GP printers. The Slayer training guide covers task-block lists and the fastest routes to 99.

Remember that accuracy comes from levels as much as gear — a mid setup with high Slayer and combat stats outperforms end-game gear at low levels. Upgrade steadily, not obsessively.

Questions players ask

Questions players ask

What is the best Slayer gear in OSRS?+

The slayer helmet is the single most important item (15% accuracy and damage on task). Beyond that, best-in-slot per style: tentacle/rancour melee, blowpipe/anguish ranged, trident/occult magic.

How do I get the slayer helmet?+

Combine a black mask with a nose peg, earmuffs, spiny helmet and facemask. The imbued version (Ranged/Magic boost) uses a scroll of imbuing from Nightmare Zone.

What is a good budget ranged setup for Slayer?+

Magic shortbow (imbued) or rune crossbow with broad bolts, Ava's device, and the necklace of fangs (~87k) as the budget necklace — it beats glory and fury for ranged offence.

What is the necklace of fangs?+

A ranged necklace from the 2 September 2026 update, dropped by turoths (1/129): +12 Ranged attack and +1 Ranged strength, no defence or prayer bonuses.

Super antipoisons (or super antis) are strongly recommended — many tasks (turoths, kurasks) and slayer bosses poison or venom you, and trips get short without them.

What is the best Slayer boss to farm for gear?+

Araxxor tasks drop the amulet of rancour and noxious halberd pieces — both top-tier melee items — plus great GP and XP per hour on task.
