OSRS Fossil Island guide 2026: sand crabs, birdhouse runs, Volcanic Mine and how to get there

Fossil Island is a members-only area north-east of Morytania, added 7 September 2017, unlocked by completing the Bone Voyage quest (no skill requirements — just 100 Kudos and The Dig Site). Reach it via the canal barge from the Digsite, or teleport with a digsite pendant once you unlock the island option. The island is best known for training: sand crabs (60 HP, aggressive, easy safespots) and ammonite crabs (100 HP, max hit 1, aggressive for 10 minutes at a time, also a Slayer task since March 2025) are the most popular low-to-mid combat training targets in the game; bird house runs give passive Hunter XP twice a day; the Volcanic Mine is a group Mining activity; and the Wyvern Cave (Fossil Island wyverns on a Slayer task) drops the ancient wyvern shield pieces. There is no bank at first — build one at the Museum Camp with 21 Construction (2 oak planks, an iron bar and 5 nails) — and a digsite pendant teleport option is unlocked by using the pendant on the strange machine in the House on the Hill. Fossils collected across the island are stored in crates and tradeable at the museum for rewards including the fossilised dragon? (sic) items and prayer xp lamps.

Key takeaways

  • Unlock: Bone Voyage quest (100 Kudos + The Dig Site) — no skill requirements to start.
  • Sand crabs (60 HP) and ammonite crabs (100 HP, max hit 1) are the classic low-mid combat training targets.
  • Ammonite crabs are also a Slayer task since March 2025 and drop numulite.
  • Bird house runs give passive Hunter XP — check them twice a day.
  • Build the Museum Camp bank with 21 Construction (2 oak planks, iron bar, 5 nails).
  • Wyvern Cave tasks drop ancient wyvern shield pieces; Volcanic Mine is the group Mining option.

Why Fossil Island matters

Fossil Island is the members-only training island north-east of Morytania, released 7 September 2017 as part of the Fossil Island update. It is home to some of the most-used training content in the game: sand and ammonite crabs for combat, bird house runs for Hunter, the Volcanic Mine for Mining, and a Slayer cave with fossil wyverns.

For new and mid-game players it is usually the first serious training hub: the crabs are aggressive, hit for almost nothing, and can be safespotted, which makes them the standard place to push Attack, Strength, Defence or Ranged from the 30s to the 70s.

It also feeds two long-term systems: fossils you collect are stored in crates and traded at the museum for rewards, and the Wyvern Cave's ancient wyvern shield is a valuable Slayer drop.

02

How to unlock and reach it

The island requires completing the Bone Voyage quest, which has no skill requirements: you need 100 Kudos and the completion of The Dig Site quest. Bone Voyage also counts toward Dragon Slayer II, so it is worth doing early.

The standard way in is the canal barge from the Digsite (close to the Varrock teleport). Once on the island, the fastest return route is a digsite pendant: use it on the strange machine inside the House on the Hill (north-east of the Museum Camp) to unlock the Fossil Island teleport option.

Alternatives include digsite teleport scrolls and a gnome glider to Lemanto Andra. Inside the island, the magic mushtree network lets you hop between the Mushroom Forest, the camp and other points once you discover each tree.

Combat training: sand and ammonite crabs

Sand crabs are the classic training target: level 15, 60 HP, aggressive, and clustered on the beaches with easy safespots. They are effectively free combat XP — the only real risk is forgetting to eat, and even that is hard.

Ammonite crabs are the bigger version: level 25, 100 HP, and a max hit of 1, which makes them completely safe to AFK. Each kill takes longer than a sand crab but gives more XP per kill, and the Mushroom Forest alone has 28 spawns. They become tolerant after about 10 minutes, so reset the aggression timer by banking or leaving and returning.

Ammonite crabs have one extra trick since March 2025: they can be assigned as a Slayer task (Mazchna, Vannaka and Chaeldar), which pairs combat training with Slayer XP. They also drop numulite, automatically collected by a ring of wealth.

  • Sand crabs: 60 HP, aggressive, easy safespots — classic low-level training.
  • Ammonite crabs: 100 HP, max hit 1, 28+ spawns in the Mushroom Forest.
  • Ammonite = Slayer task since March 2025; drops numulite.
  • Both work for melee, ranged and magic training.

Bird house runs: passive Hunter XP

Bird houses are Fossil Island's most famous daily: you build and place bird houses at the two underwater mushroom patches, fill them with seeds, and return later to collect eggs and seeds plus Hunter XP. A full run takes minutes and gives thousands of Hunter XP with zero effort, which makes it the standard passive Hunter method for accounts that do not want to train the skill actively.

You need 5 Hunter to start building bird houses and the appropriate Hunter level for each type (regular bird houses 5, oak 14, willow 24, teak 34, maple 44, mahogany 49, yew 54, magic 59, redwood 69). The collection log tracks every bird house reward, which links neatly to our collection log guide.

The habit is simple: check bird houses when you log in and before you log out — two runs a day keeps Hunter climbing with almost no time spent.

05

Volcanic Mine and the Wyvern Cave

The Volcanic Mine, on the south-east side of the island, is a group Mining minigame where players vent and repair the mine before eruptions. It is one of the best XP rates in the game for Mining in a team, and the shop sells ores and the Volcanic Mine teleport for frequent return trips.

The Wyvern Cave sits beneath the Mushroom Forest. Fossil Island wyverns are only assigned as a Slayer task, and they drop the ancient wyvern shield pieces (visage, shield pieces) — a strong defensive shield worth farming on task.

Around the rest of the island you can hunt herbiboars in the Mushroom Forest (Hunter + Herblore XP with fossils as a side product), plant teak and mahogany in the special tree patches, and calcify fossils at the mycelium pool for prayer XP lamps at the museum.

06

The Museum Camp, bank and fossil rewards

There is no bank when you arrive — you build one at the Museum Camp with 21 Construction, a hammer, 2 oak planks, an iron bar and 5 nails. The camp's notice board lists every buildable utility, and 29 Construction covers everything, including the bank, anvils, a fire and a forge.

Fossils collected while training (from crabs, wyverns and the underwater digsite) are stored in fossil storage crates around the island. Trading them at the Varrock Museum basement or the camp earns museum currency and rewards including prayer XP lamps, noted logs, and the fossil island outfit pieces.

For most players the practical loop is: Bone Voyage early, crabs to 70s, bird houses daily, Volcanic Mine with a team for Mining, and fossil wyvern tasks whenever assigned — all on one island.
