OSRS Wintertodt guide 2026: mechanics, points, rewards and the 10th anniversary

Wintertodt is a cooperative minigame-style boss fought with skills instead of combat, imprisoned north of the Wintertodt Camp behind the Doors of Dinh in Great Kourend. It was released on 8 September 2016, making 8 September 2026 its 10th anniversary. You need a Firemaking level (around 50 is the usual comfortable minimum, lower is possible with warm clothing), and the fight works by chopping bruma roots, optionally fletching them into bruma kindling, then feeding braziers to drain the boss's energy while keeping the pyromancers alive. Your warmth meter is your health — at 0% warmth you die instantly. Points (lighting 25, feeding roots 10, feeding kindling 25, repairing 25, healing pyromancers 75) translate into reward cart loot and Firemaking XP: 500+ points is the minimum for rewards, each 500 points guarantees an extra reward, and subduing the boss with 500+ points gives 100x your Firemaking level in XP. Notable rewards include the tome of fire, the pyromancer outfit, the phoenix pet and the dragon axe.

Key takeaways

  • Wintertodt turns 10 on 8 September 2026 — released 8 September 2016, the skill-based boss of the Kourend north.
  • No combat needed: chop bruma roots, fletch them into kindling, feed the braziers, repair them and heal the pyromancers.
  • Your warmth meter is your health; 0% warmth means instant death. Warm clothing reduces damage and speeds regen.
  • Points: light 25, feed root 10, feed kindling 25, repair 25, heal pyromancer 75 — 500 points is the reward threshold.
  • Subduing with 500+ points gives 100x your Firemaking level in XP plus reward cart loot; every 500 extra points guarantees another reward.
  • Big-name rewards: tome of fire, pyromancer outfit, phoenix pet (1/5000 from supply crates) and the dragon axe.

What Wintertodt is — and its 10th anniversary

Wintertodt is a cooperative minigame-style boss fought with skills rather than combat. It is imprisoned behind the Doors of Dinh, north of the Wintertodt Camp in Great Kourend, and the fight is a community effort: everyone works the braziers to drain its energy before it drains your warmth.

The boss was released on 8 September 2016 — which means 8 September 2026 is its 10th anniversary. It remains one of the most popular early-game activities in the game: it trains Firemaking, Woodcutting, Fletching, Construction and Herblore at once, is genuinely low-risk once you know the rhythm, and its reward cart makes it a fixture of ironman starts.

The wiki's Wintertodt item pages also saw fresh updates in early September 2026, with the bruma kindling and bruma root creation details expanded — a good excuse to revisit the fight for 2026.

Requirements and how to get there

There is no hard Firemaking requirement, but around level 50 is the usual comfortable minimum — the passive cold damage scales with your Firemaking level, so higher levels take less damage and 50 is where the fight becomes forgiving. Warm clothing matters more than gear: the full warm outfit (or at least several pieces) noticeably cuts the damage you take.

The standard way in is a Games Necklace teleport to the Wintertodt camp (or the Kourend teleport network, then run). There is a tent with a bank chest just east of the game necklace teleport spot — use it before entering, because inside the prison you must leave the game to use a bank.

The fight is on official worlds, so joining a busy world means other players keep the braziers lit and the pyromancers alive while you focus on your own points.

03

How the fight works

The Wintertodt cannot be attacked with combat. Instead you help the pyromancers drain its energy: chop bruma roots near the braziers, optionally fletch them with a knife into stronger bruma kindling, then add them to burning braziers. You also light unlit braziers, repair destroyed ones with a hammer (Construction XP), and heal pyromancers — each pyromancer has 14 health and becomes incapacitated after two hits from the boss, and needs one dose of a rejuvenation potion to be healed.

Your warmth meter, top-left of the HUD, is your health. It drops to 0% you die instantly. Restore it by eating any food that heals at least 4 Hitpoints (+35% warmth), drinking rejuvenation potions (+30%), or natural regeneration (8% per minute, plus 1% per piece of warm clothing worn, up to 4). A ring of life triggers below 10% warmth and a phoenix necklace at 20% or less.

The boss uses five attack types: standard attacks that damage you, brazier heavy attacks (heavy snow warns you, then the brazier shatters — stand clear), brazier light attacks (it just goes out), pyromancer attacks (light snow warns, then she takes damage), and an AoE style attack. Attack frequency scales with remaining energy — standard attacks dominate early, brazier and pyromancer attacks later.

  • Chop bruma roots → fletch into bruma kindling → feed braziers.
  • Light unlit braziers and repair destroyed ones with a hammer.
  • Heal incapacitated pyromancers with a rejuvenation potion.
  • Watch the warmth meter: 0% warmth = instant death.
  • Leave the prison before the round ends and you lose all points for the round.
04

Points and XP rates

Every action earns points: lighting a brazier is 25, adding a bruma root is 10, adding bruma kindling is 25, repairing a destroyed brazier is 25, and healing a pyromancer is 75. You need at least 500 points to receive anything, and there is no known cap on points in a single fight.

XP comes as a multiplier of your level: lighting a brazier is 6x Firemaking, cutting a root is 0.3x Woodcutting, feeding a root is 3x Firemaking, fletching a root is 0.6x Fletching, feeding kindling is 3.8x Firemaking, repairing is 4x Construction, making a rejuvenation potion is 0.1x Herblore, and subduing the boss with 500+ points is 100x Firemaking.

In practice, efficient mass-world Wintertodt runs are some of the fastest Firemaking XP in the game outside of burning magic logs, and the combination of low risk and multi-skill XP is why it has stayed popular for a decade.

05

Rewards: the reward cart and the big-name items

Subduing the Wintertodt with 500+ points gives you Firemaking XP (your level × 100) and at least two rewards from the reward cart. Every 500 additional points guarantees one extra reward, with a linear chance for more above each threshold — 1,200 points means 3 guaranteed plus a 40% chance of a fourth. The cart can hold up to 8,000 rewards.

What you get is influenced by your skill levels at the moment you search the cart: herb, ore, fish, uncut gem, seed and log drops scale with your Herblore, Mining, Fishing, Crafting, Farming and Woodcutting levels, and higher levels remove the low-tier filler from the table.

The headline items are the tome of fire (an off-hand book that stores fire runes and boosts fire spells), the pyromancer outfit (Firemaking XP set bonus), the phoenix pet (a very rare drop from supply crates, around 1/5000) and the dragon axe.

Strategies and tips for 2026

In a mass world, focus on one thing at a time: keep feeding kindling for the 3.8x XP and 25 points, and only break away to repair or heal when the HUD icons tell you to. Fletching roots into kindling first is the efficient loop because kindling pays more XP and points than raw roots.

Manage warmth before it is a problem: eat a piece of food rather than waiting for the low-warmth warning, and bring a few rejuvenation potions for the pyromancers — making them is part of the fight, and Brew'ma can combine the ingredients for you if you have not done Druidic Ritual.

For ironmen, Wintertodt is the classic early-game bank: the reward cart supplies herbs, seeds, ores and logs that cover the first dozens of hours of account progress. And if you want the phoenix, treat it as a long-term goal — the pet rate is low and the fight is quick, so it is mostly a matter of sustained runs rather than skill.
