OSRS Pandemonium quest guide: requirements, walkthrough and rewards

Pandemonium (quest #174) is a Novice, short quest released on 19 November 2025 that acts as the on-ramp for the Sailing skill and its own island, The Pandemonium. There are no level or quest requirements and no items to bring — you pick up a hammer and saw during the quest. Talk to Will or Anne on the dock east of Port Sarim's Food Store to start. The story: you interview for a job, steer the boat south to a pirate wreck east of Karamja, salvage a mysterious medallion and an old cup, then get pushed overboard by Anne. You wash up on The Pandemonium, talk to 'Squawking' Steve Beanie and Ribs in the pub, exchange the old cup for a raft, build a cargo hold, run a cargo delivery between the island and Port Sarim, and return for the finale. Rewards: 1 quest point, 400 Sailing XP, permanent access to the Sailing skill and the island, a raft, 25 sawmill coupons, 2 repair kits and a spyglass. Pandemonium is also a prerequisite for four follow-up quests — Prying Times, Current Affairs, Troubled Tortugans and Fallen From Grace.

Overview: what Pandemonium is

Pandemonium is the Sailing starter quest and quest #174 overall. It was released on 19 November 2025 to introduce the Sailing skill and its strangest location, The Pandemonium — a pirate-run island off the coast of Karamja that the previous era of RuneScape lore remembers as a cursed, chaotic port.

The quest is deliberately short and Novice-difficulty: it exists to make you sail a boat, use the salvaging hook, understand your ship's cargo hold and reach an island hub, not to test your stats. With zero requirements it is the intended first step for literally any account that wants to unlock Sailing.

Its practical payoff is outsized: beyond the quest rewards, completing Pandemonium opens the island's port facilities (shipwright, notice board with port tasks, salvaging station, bank crab dock, pub) and puts several later quests within reach, all with no combat and no items to lose.

The OSRS Wiki's Fallen From Grace route and the Sailing port guides all assume you have finished Pandemonium — it is the glue holding the early Sailing content together.

Requirements and items

There are none. No skill levels, no quest dependencies, no combat levels and no recommended stats. You can walk into this quest on a fresh account minutes after Tutorial Island.

You also need no items: the hammer and saw required to build the raft's cargo hold are found in crates during the quest itself. That makes Pandemonium one of the most accessible quest entrances in the game — it is genuinely the intended zero-barrier Sailing on-ramp.

Service/utility tips that help but are not required: a way back to Port Sarim or teleports make the optional steps snappier, and a little spare inventory space for cargo is appreciated. Nothing of yours can be lost and there are no enemies to fight.

Walkthrough

Start at Port Sarim: on the dock just east of the Food Store you will find Will and Anne. Talk to either of them to begin — they are hiring and your interview goes about as well as you'd expect for a crew working a suspicious boat job.

Job interview: board their boat and steer it south through the Bay of Sarim towards the pirate wreck east of the Karamja Shipyard. Use the salvaging hook to retrieve a mysterious medallion and an old cup from the wreck. Will takes the medallion — and Anne pushes you overboard.

Pandemonium!: you wash up on the island of The Pandemonium. Talk to 'Squawking' Steve Beanie, then find Ribs in the pub, who tells you the Crimson Kraken curse story and points you toward finding Will and Anne.

Collecting cargo: trade the old cup to Junior Jim for a raft, climb into the crates for a hammer and saw, and build a cargo hold on the raft. Sail back to Port Sarim, dock, take cargo from the ledger table (unequip your weapons first — the cargo interaction demands empty hands), stow it in the hold, sail back and deliver.

Finish: report to Junior Jim, then Steve Beanie, who introduces Old Grog — your link to later Sailing content. The quest wraps with the island open to you as a permanent hub.

No combat occurs at any point; the only real mechanics are steering, the salvaging hook and the cargo-run sequence.

Rewards and why they matter

Pandemonium hands out: 1 quest point, 400 Sailing XP (300 on completion plus 100 for the cargo delivery), permanent access to the Sailing skill, access to The Pandemonium island, a raft, 25 sawmill coupons (redeem a free wood plank), 2 repair kits and a spyglass.

The 400 Sailing XP is a real head start on a fresh skill, but the durable value is the unlocks. Gaining access to the Sailing skill is the entire point for most accounts, and The Pandemonium's port facilities — shipwright, notice board, salvaging and the bank crab dock — make it one of the first proper Sailing hubs you can use.

It is also a quest gate: Prying Times, Current Affairs, Troubled Tortugans and Fallen From Grace all list Pandemonium as required. Fallen From Grace in particular is covered separately on this site, so complete this quest first to keep that line open.

The raft and spyglass are modest but flavourful starting tools for the maritime content ahead, and 25 sawmill coupons remove one early material cost.
