OSRS Magic training guide 2026: fast routes from 1 to 99 on every budget

Magic is trained by casting spells, and XP is per cast rather than per damage — which makes low-damage, cheap spells an efficient route. The standard 2026 routes: 1-11 wind strike, 11-19 confuse, 19-27 wind bolt (or bind), 27-33 weaken, 33-39 fire bolt (or telegrab), 39-46 curse, 46-51 bind or low-level alchemy, 51-55 high alchemy, 55-65 superheat item, 65-68 stun, 68-75 ice burst (multi-target), and 75-99 ice barrage in the Monkey Madness 2 caves or at slayer burst spots — barraging is the fastest XP in the game at roughly 200-300k XP/h. For free-to-play, the route is wind strike to fire strike and then mind runes for fire bolt from 35; the fastest F2P XP is high alchemy from 55. The budget-friendly members alternative is alchemy plus stun spells (65+) at around 90k XP/h, or superheat item if you are also training Smithing. Every route is cheaper with the right equipment: an elemental staff removes rune costs for its element, the Kodai wand improves ancient spells, and the occult necklace adds 10% magic damage. Magic also makes money along the way: high alchemy on profitable items, telegrab on wines of zamorak, and later barraging drops.

Key takeaways

  • XP is per cast, not per damage — cheap spells can be efficient training.
  • F2P route: wind strike (1) → fire strike (13) → fire bolt (35) → high alchemy (55).
  • Members route: curse (19) → low alch (21) → high alch (55) → superheat (55) → stun (65) → ice burst (68) → ice barrage (75).
  • Barraging (ice burst/barrage) is the fastest XP — 200-300k XP/h at 68+.
  • An elemental staff removes rune costs; the Kodai wand boosts ancients; the occult necklace adds 10% damage.
  • Alchemy and telegrab make money while you train — never pay full price for a Magic route.

How Magic XP works

Magic is unusual: XP is awarded per cast, not per point of damage, and every spell has a fixed XP value. That means low-damage spells can be perfectly efficient training — a cheap spell cast a thousand times beats an expensive spell cast ten times.

The skill splits into combat magic (strikes, bolts, blasts, waves, surges, ancients) and utility magic (alchemy, teleports, enchantment, superheat). The fastest training is almost always combat magic against many targets; the cheapest is alchemy and enchantment with a profit.

Because runes are the cost, the biggest lever is rune efficiency: an elemental staff eliminates the cost of its element, and multi-element spells like ice barrage only cost the expensive runes when you already have the staff.

02

Levels 1-39: strikes and curses

For members, the standard opener is wind strike (1) to 11, confuse (11) to 19, wind bolt or bind (19) to 27, weaken (27) to 33, fire bolt or telegrab (33) to 39 — with an air staff making wind spells free. Curse spells are the budget classic because they cast on anything without needing damage.

Free-to-play follows a similar ladder: wind strike to 13, fire strike to 35, then fire bolt with mind runes from 35. F2P Magic is slower but completely viable to high alchemy.

Telegrabbing wines of zamorak from 33 is a classic money-maker during these levels — it trains Magic and makes a profit at the same time.

03

Levels 39-65: alchemy and superheat

Curse (39) is the classic budget bridge to the 50s, and low-level alchemy (21) is the first money spell. At 55 everything changes: high alchemy becomes available and stays one of the best value-for-money training spells in the game — cast it on profitable items (items worth more alched than bought) and you train for free.

Superheat item (55) is the alternative if you also train Smithing: it smelts ores instantly with Magic XP, saving furnace trips and banking time.

Stun (65) is the efficiency milestone — stunning in a multi-combat area gives roughly 90k XP/h for a low rune cost, and it is the standard 'budget fast' method until ice burst.

04

Levels 65-99: stuns, bursts and barrages

Ice burst (68) is the first multi-target ancient spell worth using: bursting in the Monkey Madness 2 caves (or at popular burst spots like the Catacombs of Kourend) hits multiple targets per cast and reaches 100k+ XP/h. Ice barrage (75) takes over at the highest rates — 200-300k XP/h is realistic with a Kodai wand and proper gear.

The endgame is all about barraging: the MM2 caves for pure XP, or burst/barrage Slayer (like Dust Devils, Nechryael or Smoke Devils) for XP plus profit. Blood barraging in niche spots is the AFK-leaning alternative.

From 94 the ancients cap out and the fastest remaining methods are the barrage routes with better gear — by then you are effectively at 99 if you did the MM2 grind.

  • 68: ice burst — first efficient multi-target spell.
  • 75: ice barrage — 200-300k XP/h at MM2 caves.
  • Slayer bursting: dust devils, nechryael, smoke devils — XP + profit.
  • 94+: barraging with Kodai/occult is the finish line.
05

Gear and rune efficiency

The single best Magic upgrade is an elemental staff: air staff makes wind spells free, fire staff makes fire spells free, and so on. The occult necklace (+10% magic damage) and the Tormented bracelet (+5% magic damage) are the two best value damage upgrades in the skill.

For ancients, the Kodai wand is the standard upgrade — it makes all elemental ancient spells free and auto-casts ancients. The saturated heart boosts your magic level for barraging.

Rune-saving tricks: use the right spell tier (don't overcast), buy runes in bulk on the GE rather than from shops, and pick a training spell whose staves cover most of the cost. A full barrage hour with Kodai costs far less than it looks because the elemental runes are free.

06

F2P and budget routes

Free-to-play can realistically reach the 50s-60s with strikes, curse and alchemy, and high alchemy from 55 is both the fastest and most profitable F2P method. Mind runes for fire bolt are the main cost — farm them or buy them cheap.

If your budget is very tight on members, the 'poor man's route' is curse to 39, low alch to 55, high alch from there — slow but nearly free, and high alchemy can actually profit.

The final advice for every budget: never train Magic by paying full rune prices for a spell you could replace with a staff-covered alternative — the difference over 99 is tens of millions of GP.

Questions players ask

Questions players ask

What is the fastest way to train Magic in OSRS?+

Ice barraging from 75 — 200-300k XP/h at the Monkey Madness 2 caves or on Slayer burst tasks. Before that, stun (65) at ~90k XP/h and ice burst (68) are the efficient steps.

How do I train Magic for free?+

Free-to-play: wind strike → fire strike → fire bolt with mind runes, then high alchemy from 55 — the fastest and most profitable F2P method.

What is the cheapest way to train Magic?+

The curse → low alchemy → high alchemy route is nearly free and can even profit; an elemental staff removes its element's rune cost entirely.

Is Magic profitable to train?+

Yes — high alchemy on profitable items, telegrabbing wines of zamorak, and later bursting on Slayer tasks can make Magic self-funding or profitable.

What gear should I use for Magic training?+

An elemental staff for free runes, the occult necklace (+10% damage) and Tormented bracelet (+5%) as damage upgrades, and the Kodai wand for ancients.

What level do I need for ice barrage?+

75 Magic, plus the Desert Treasure quest to unlock the ancient spellbook. Ice burst at 68 is the efficient earlier step.
