OSRS Barbarian Assault guide 2026: the five roles, honour points, gambles and the fighter torso
Barbarian Assault is a combat minigame played in the basement of the Barbarian Outpost by a team of five, each in one of five roles — Attacker, Defender, Collector, Healer and Fighter. There are no requirements to play, and it is a safe instance: dying costs you nothing (though items you drop manually are lost). Your team clears ten waves of Penance creatures and then defeats the Penance Queen using omega eggs fired from the egg launcher. Every completed wave awards honour points for your role, and killing the queen gives 80 points in your role plus 5 in the other three. Honour points buy role upgrades (levels 1-5, 1,400 points for a level-5 role and 5,600 for all five) and Penance armour such as the fighter torso (the main reason most players go), or can be gambled at Commander Connad: low, medium and high gambles pay out resources and armour, with the dragon chainbody and the Penance Queen pet (roughly 1/1000 from high gambles) as the headline prizes, plus elite clue scrolls at about 1/10 from high gambles.
Key takeaways
- Five-player team minigame with no requirements; safe instance — death costs nothing.
- Roles: Attacker, Defender, Collector, Healer and Fighter, each with its own task and honour point pool.
- Ten waves of Penance creatures, then the Penance Queen — killed with omega eggs from the egg launcher.
- Honour points: wave completions plus 80 + 5 + 5 for the queen kill; 1,400 points maxes one role, 5,600 all five.
- The fighter torso (Strength bonus) is the most-sought shop reward; the Penance pet is ~1/1000 from high gambles.
- The Hard Kandarin Diary adds 10% more honour points — worth having before a long torso grind.
What Barbarian Assault is
Barbarian Assault is a combat minigame played in the basement of the Barbarian Outpost, released in January 2007. A team of five players works through ten waves of Penance creatures and finishes with the Penance Queen. There are no requirements to play, though higher combat levels help because the Penance creatures are aggressive.
It is a safe activity in an instanced area: dying here costs nothing — no items are lost, including anything in an Item Retrieval Service deathbank. The only way to lose items is to drop them manually. (Hardcore group ironmen should still be careful: the instance is dangerous for them.)
The wiki's Barbarian Assault gamble pages were updated in early September 2026 with fresh details on the gamble shop tiers, which makes this a good moment for a full 2026 guide.
The five roles
Each player picks one of five roles, and the roles rotate each wave so everyone plays everything: the Attacker kills the Penance rangers with ranged attacks; the Defender collects and disposes of Penance runners before they reach the caves; the Collector gathers eggs and poison from the Penance fighters and hands them to the right teammates; the Healer poisons the Penance healers with the right food and keeps the team topped up; and the Fighter kills the Penance fighters in melee.
Every wave has a different primary role, and each role earns honour points in its own pool. Calling is the other half of the game: the correct role calls out what the team needs (for example, the correct egg colour), and the call horn in the south-east corner lets anyone broadcast to the whole team. Wrong or missed calls cost the team efficiency — a runner that escapes to the southern caves subtracts 3 honour points from everyone (double for defenders), and using the wrong poisoned food on Penance healers costs points too.
The egg launcher is a team safety net: any player may fire it at enemies without losing honour points, and it helps the last role alive finish a wave.
How a run works: ten waves and the Penance Queen
Each of the ten waves throws Penance creatures at the team in a specific composition, and each wave ends when every monster is dead. The composition shifts by wave and role — the Defender faces runners, the Healer faces healers, the Collector needs eggs of the correct colour, the Fighter handles fighters, and the Attacker handles rangers.
On wave 10 the Penance Queen spawns from the trapdoor once all other Penance are dead (or after 4 minutes). She attacks the whole team at once with a ranged attack for up to 13 damage, can melee anyone who runs close, and spawns level-63 queen spawns that any team member can kill with any attack style. She can only be harmed by omega eggs, which the team must assemble by passing the correct items between roles; once the eggs are loaded and the other monsters are dead, the team fires them from the egg launcher to finish her.
Completing a wave awards honour points based on both your role performance and the team's overall performance; harder waves pay more, and the queen kill gives 80 points in your role and 5 in each of the other three.
Honour points and role upgrades
Honour points are the minigame's currency, and each role has its own pool, capped at 5,000. You spend them at Commander Connad's reward shop. Role levels run from 1 to 5 and unlock extra abilities — more damage, higher healing and so on; reaching level 5 in all roles is also a requirement for the Elite Kandarin Diary. A level-5 role costs 1,400 points in that role, and maxing all five costs 5,600 points in total.
The Hard Kandarin Diary grants 10% more honour points (rounded down), which noticeably shortens the fighter torso and gambles grind — if you plan a serious Barbarian Assault session, doing the diary first is the efficient play.
You can check your current points with Commander Connad near the bank chest or on the blackboard outside the arena.
Rewards and the gambles system
The reward shop sells Penance armour — the fighter torso is the headline item (a Strength bonus body that does not degrade, making it the standard mid-game melee chest), and several armour pieces only become available after you have killed the Penance Queen. Points from all roles are required for the armour, which is why a torso run rotates roles.
Alternatively, Commander Connad lets you gamble your points in low, medium or high gambles for resources and armour. The famous high-gamble prizes are the dragon chainbody and the Penance Queen pet — the pet is roughly 1/1000 from high gambles — and high gambles also drop elite clue scrolls at about 1/10, which is one of the easiest ways to farm elite clues. On mobile the gambles are called Lucky dips.
Because points are per-role, serious gamblers typically specialise: grind points in one role, gamble them away, repeat.
Tips for teams in 2026
Call everything, even when it feels obvious — the team cannot act on what it does not know, and the horn exists for that reason. Keep the roles rotating every wave so nobody's honour pool stalls, and let the Attacker handle rangers before they shred low defence.
For the queen fight, agree on the omega egg assembly order before the wave starts; the last-minute scramble is where teams lose runs. And if you are there for the torso specifically, do the Hard Kandarin Diary first and check the blackboard between runs — knowing your point totals stops you from over-grinding one role.
Finally, the minigame is more fun with a group you know, but world 306 (the classic Barbarian Assault world) has pick-up teams running constantly, and the torso grind is one of the most social early-game goals in the game.
Questions players ask
Do I need a team for Barbarian Assault?+
Yes — it is a five-player minigame with five fixed roles. You can join pick-up teams on world 306 or bring a group you know; there is no solo mode.
What are the five roles in Barbarian Assault?+
Attacker (kills rangers), Defender (disposes of runners), Collector (gathers eggs and poison), Healer (poisons healers and heals the team) and Fighter (kills fighters in melee).
How do I get the fighter torso?+
Earn honour points across all five roles and buy the torso from Commander Connad's reward shop. It is the most sought Barbarian Assault item for its non-degrading Strength bonus.
What is the Penance Queen pet rate?+
Roughly 1/1000 from high gambles at Commander Connad. High gambles also drop elite clue scrolls at about 1/10.
Do I lose items if I die at Barbarian Assault?+
No — it is a safe activity in an instance; death costs nothing and protected items stay protected. Only items you drop manually are lost.
How many honour points to max all roles?+
1,400 points maxes a single role to level 5; maxing all five roles costs 5,600 points total. The Hard Kandarin Diary adds 10% more points per wave.
